Courage Lies in the Heart
Anne Sourbeer Morris, Ed.D.
As I encourage my child to PURSUE new ventures,
I give her the COURAGE to risk failure:
To fall to the ground and fly again.
As I encourage my child to LEARN that which is new,
I give her the COURAGE to be open to new ideas:
To see the beauty in a world of adversity.
As I encourage my child to EXPLORE the unknown,
I give her the COURAGE to challenge herself:
To do what she has never done before.
As I encourage my child to THINK for herself,
I give her the COURAGE to grow:
To find the strength to stand behind her beliefs.
As I encourage my child to FOLLOW her dreams,
I give her the COURAGE to know what is in her heart and soar!
To love life.
To my daughters and grands … to ALL! May YOU always find courage!
First published in 1996 in Symphonies of the Soul. This poem is as valid today as it ever was!

Unexpected Pathways Chapter: “Letting Go of the Parking Meter”
Update: Promoted to managing three divisions of software engineers vs one, up to 110 Associates in my VP job at Inmar. My own personal company, iWhereTo Inc now has expanded to have a full time employee with our first release of our Child Management Software as a Service slated for early 2017.
One New Inspiration or Life Revelation: At the end of 2015, my sister Kathy and I moved my 91 year old Mother who has Alzheimer’s, to Clemmons. I had no idea how much this would impact me – how difficult and at times overwhelming it was to have to make the kinds of decisions you make for your elderly parents. However, I believe it has made me a stronger, better person in the long run, and I am grateful to be able to ensure my Mother has the best care she can get, as well as get to see her more often. It has allowed me to resolve some of the original conflicts I’ve had with my Mom and just love her for who she is in the place that she is right now.
Business Name – Our new Software will be managed and released under KiwiKidz LLC, a subsidiary of iWhereTo Inc.

“The Women of Unexpected Pathways Project … One Year Later” continues with an update from chapter author, Margie Florini!
In 2015 and 2016, I am continuing to grow in my art business. In the Fall of 2015, I was juried in an artist member of NAWA or the National Association of Women Artists (based in New York) and an artist member of NAWA – Massachusetts Chapter.
In October 2015, I was accepted as an associate artist member of another historic art group called OPA – Oil Painters of America – and will continue to enter national shows in order to gain signature member status.
Of course, I continue to paint new works for these national shows and local galleries, too.
I continue to work on cut-paper collage illustrations for book 2 of “The Pajamas Of My Dreams”, a.k.a. “Pajamas, Too!” Laurie Collins, my author, and hope to have a publisher for this project soon. In the meantime, the “Pajamas Events” continue in libraries, schools and museums – with wonderful children, teachers and care-givers collecting pajamas for families less fortunate. To that end, I keep trying to connect with the decision-makers at Carters (and Target Stores) to put together a larger “Pajama Party Event” where children hear the story, perform the “Pajamas Of My Dreams Rap”, we can give books and crafts kits away to families who purchase a pair of pajamas to give — in the Fall and Winter. It has been endless phone calls and sending along books and crafts, but I remain hopeful that our purpose will be embraced and more pajamas and books will find their way to homes.
Last and most important, I have given your book to people and families who I mentioned in my chapter and it has been so exciting to hear their comments. Also, women friends of mine who are now “empty nesters” have asked me for support and suggestions about what they do now that the children are gone. It is so helpful to share your book with them as a learning tool of all the wonderful ways that women move successfully through their very different lives at different ages and stages of life!
All my very best to you and all the great women of Unexpected Pathways,
Margie Florini

It has been one year since the publication of Unexpected Pathways: The Journeys of Women in the Workforce and much has been achieved since then in the lives of the twenty-three women featured in the volume. For example, Clare Novak continues to be an international trainer, taking on new roles and responsibilities, as she travels the globe! In November 2015, Clare Novak joined the USAID Program, “Engendering Utilities.” Her role is to work with seven electrical distribution companies in five countries, Macedonia, Georgia, Jordan, Kenya and Nigeria, to ensure that the Human Resources processes are equitable for both women and men. The utilities intend to increase the percentage of women in their workforce and the number of roles women fill. In her role, Clare visits each company twice a year for a week. Twice yearly, representatives from the seven utilities are brought together for a multi-day workshop focused on development and customer service. “Women of intelligence, commitment and business sense are everywhere in the world working to make businesses better. By making businesses stronger they build their nations.” Clare Novak – Novak and Associates – www.business-leadership-qualities.com

The “Women of Unexpected Pathway” lured Dr. Anne in with the promise of a girls night out … not knowing that they had planned a wonderful “thank you” party in her honor. About the event, Dr. Anne said, “There are not enough words to express my gratitude for the wonderful and sweet friendships that have been forged. This amazing work of art goes with a web link in which the women have sent messages of celebration … To be shared in the future, but tonight there is only gratitude. And … Wow! Mitti Cannon flew in from Alabama just for the evening! …”

Sharing another testimony from Jaclyn Logan about Dr. Anne’s presentation during Leslie Wright’s Ladies Night In – After in Raleigh, NC, on July 25, 2015 … What an privilege it is to encourage and inspire …
“Anne, it was great hearing you speak the other night in Raleigh! I can’t wait to get and read your book! I myself have had some crazy and unexpected pathways! That event was the first actual event I had done with my cake/cupcake business. It has been slow coming for years with …1 or 2 every few months, but through a bunch of crazy circumstances this year, I am doing 2-4 cakes a weekend now! It is my dream to have my own shop! To know there are plenty of women out there that started out in a rough place but have made it is so encouraging! Thank you so much!!”

We are incredibly honored by Vonda Farrow’s testimony after Dr. Anne’s presentation during Leslie Wright’s Ladies Night In – After in Raleigh, NC, on July 25, 2015 … We share it here:
“I did my first vending event last night. It was a wonderful experience. I heard some gr8ness in the room @ Ladies Night In: After hosted by Leslie Wright. I received more confirmations about how I live my life in the workplace from Dr. Anne’s speech.
One of the things I want to share was the moment she discussed how these women pushed forward and lived on purpose, being unapologetically themselves, although they all had hidden scars. We work with other women and still don’t know them. Then she asked the ladies to examine their own hidden scars, and to consider moving forward to their After. After pain, after failure, and even how you handle life after success.”

Mechanical Engineer and Unexpected Pathways chapter author representing the third life decade, Gabrielle Jordan shared an update! Gabrielle says, “I’ve been doing some great things with Society of Women Engineers (SWE). This past January 2015, I was invited to speak at NC State University to the collegiate women in the SWE chapter there. It was a blast! And in March 2015, the abstract I submitted to speak at the SWE Region D conference was accepted! I had a great time speaking to other 20-somethings about ‘tricks of the trade’ when it comes to being a New Girl on the Job in a male dominated environment. That event was held at Tennessee Tech University.” Gabrielle also collaborated with Melissa Wittner to create and coach the First All-Girls Robotics Team in the Piedmont Triad of North Carolina!

Update: Unexpected Pathways: The Journeys of Women in the Workforce
“Unexpected Pathways” is being prepared for publication! In honor of this exciting news, we will begin to re-introduce our incredible and courageous chapter authors! Let us begin with Bonnie Dawn Clark. In her chapter ‘Paving the Road to Hell, I Found Heaven‘ Bonnie advises: “One cannot know what one does not know! Ask questions, especially ask, ‘What should I ask you?’ My costliest decisions in life, personally, spiritually, emotionally and financially, came from me believ…ing I was ‘right’, and that I knew how things would occur in the future, all the while maintaining an ignorant attachment to being ‘right.’ I can either be happy and rich, or I can be right. I no longer need to be right.”

Girls Exploring Tomorrow’s Technology – GETT Pannel Discussion – Dr. Anne’s Remarks!
Our goal today is to inspire the future … the future of YOUR daughters by offering them an amazing educational experience … by offering them knowledge through the incredible GETT program.
We desire to inspire your daughter to be more than she ever thought she could be!
We desire to inspire the future to aspire to greatness!
Knowledge is power that cannot be take away
Knowledge is power that cannot be take away … EVER
By being here today with your daughter, you are offering her the opportunity to learn and to become aware of new and exciting career options.
You are offering her the opportunity to discover possibilities that she may not have known previously existed.
By being here today you are investing in yourselves and in your daughters.
As we invest in ourselves and our children … We invest in their future!
Today you – parents and educators – are also taking advantage of the opportunity to learn about STEAM careers and how to support students through the career and educational decision-making process.
A parent’s influence upon a student’s career and educational decision making is incredible. In fact that influence is among the strongest.
Sometimes in this fast-paced technologically driven world, we do not feel that we are influential, but we are.
Today we have heard our panelists speak of the influence of parents and others on their career path.
We have learned about the roadblocks that they encountered, how they navigated difficult roads and the support or lack of it that they gained from parents and schools.
We learned about the experiences that motivated them and kept them focused upon their dreams and goals.
These women are doing the work they love.
In her lifetime your daughter may work 30+ years … As an educator, this is in fact my 45 year of working with students and families, but who is counting? I love the work I do.
Do we not want our daughters- and I have two – to do the work they love and love the work they do? Of course, we do.
But we must recognize that that work may differ from our own. That work may be unknown to us. And that is a bit frightening.
But is our charge and challenge to let our daughters follow their dreams and to soar.
I frequently tell parents, we must let our children go to bring them back. We must give them the gift of freedom … they will be eternally grateful and they will return to us.
Today, your daughter will go away from GETT a changed person. Children grow and change with every experience.
Your daughter will be armed with new knowledge and power. She will be empowered with new enthusiasm, ideas, and dreams. How will we as parents receive this excitement?
As we listen to our children’s enthusiasm and hear what they have leaned … how will we receive their ideas … their new found passion for a career possibly unknown to us?
Will we respond with acceptance or discourage them because of our own fear of an unknown journey?
Sometimes we as parents let our own fears or lack of knowledge about an opportunity get in the way of our support for the excitement of our children.
In these cases, let us be honest with our children about our fears and let us learn together, about the unknown pathway or possibility.
If we are fearful and if we can be open … we may be able to change our thinking.
As we change our thinking, we may ultimately changes our daughter’s life – her career trajectory – as we encourage her to be open to new and exciting horizons.
Maybe we must first remember that “careers have not gender” … “careers have not gender”
The opportunities for your daughter are limitless if we realize that all career opportunities are open to her. Again … If we change our thinking, we can change her life!
If we change our thinking, we can change her life!
Since moving to North Carolina five years ago, I have had the opportunity to examine the career and educational development of women through a book project called “Unexpected Pathways: The Journeys of Women in the Workforce.”
The book relates the career/life journeys of twenty-three women aged 20 – 60 + … The stories are fascinating, but I am a bit biased at this point.
As it turns out, many of the “Women of Unexpected Pathways” embarked upon STEAM professions, and all – despite road blocks from both family, school and society – demonstrated resilience, determination, perseverance and a strong desire to follow their dreams no matter what.
They were also tenacious and flexible. They would not let anything get in the way of their goals. Despite being knocked down by life.
I wish that I could “bottle” the flexibility, resilience and tenacity of these women and gift them to your daughters! Nothing in the world would stop them!
The chapter authors also describe relatively unexpected pathways, as their journeys evolved over time. The women created their life as they created their careers. In some cases, their careers created their life.
The career pathway one chooses makes a significant difference in the life one will lead – by choice or by default.
I also must note that those who had the most positive support from parents and mentors in following unfamiliar pathways seemed to be empowered at a far earlier age
Sadly, some individuals, are bogged down by fear and never move from a familiar place. They never experience the opportunities and options available to them.
When you are open to the possibilities … who knows where life will lead?”
Help us to inspire the future!

Update: Unexpected Pathways: The Journeys of Women in the Workforce
Our final Unexpected Pathways chapter author is “Dr. Anne” herself, relating her ten year “Journey to Unexpected Pathways.” In the epilogue of Unexpected Pathways: The Journeys of Women in the Workforce, Dr. Anne writes: “True wisdom is ageless. True idealism is ageless. Idealism must not be “assigned” to the young or wisdom to the old. As we create our career/life journey we must embody both idealism and wisdom. We must maintain the enthusiasm and passion of the young while embodying the conviction and perseverance of those who have paved the way for us. Our hearts are ageless. Our dreams are ageless. The belief in our journey must be perennial and unwavering – In living life – we honor ourselves; we honor the generations of women who have gone before us and we honor those who will follow. In living life, we create our legacy.” Learn more about Dr. Anne Sourbeer Morris and the “Women of Unexpected Pathways” in the “Celebrating the Women of Unexpected Pathways” section of the Futures Inspired Website – futuresinspired.com

This week’s Unexpected Pathways chapter author, Kaitlyn Green reflects, “Fear is an inescapable emotion when facing uncertainty, and to some extent it can motivate us to make positive changes. Often, though, fear can lead to the type of indecision and misjudgment that keep us from realizing our potential. I wish that I could have understood when I was originally charting my course in the world, that there was so much less to fear and be anxious about. Perhaps my story will resonate with someone and make their journey just a bit easier or their grasp a bit greater.” Learn more about Kaitlyn and the “Women of Unexpected Pathways” in the “Celebrating the Women of Unexpected Pathways” section of the Futures Inspired Website – futuresinspired.com

Futures Inspired (www.futureinspired.com) is pleased to introduce this week’s “Unexpected Pathways” chapter author Marviette Jefferson Usher. Marviette says of her career path, “I have never thought of my journey as “unexpected.” In fact, quite the opposite, I have always been very intentional and planful, yet despite my solid planning and expectation of great success, my life journey offered modifications to my intentions and thrust me into unanticipated, yet important life phases. I have always believed that I was destined to be a successful career woman. I have always been passionate both about my primary job as a computer programmer/software developer and my love for fashion. These passions have manifested into a fashion design business and my current quest to become a National Sales Director for Mary Kay. I am now transitioning out of the information technology industry to the business of fashion, faith, and the impacting of women’s lives.”

August 22, 2017
Dear Anne,
When you first started to gather the material for your book I was on the outside of this adventure. After all, what’s a guy going to do with a book on women for women? Well, when the book became a reality and you hosted your initial celebration and book signing with several of the contributing segment authors, I attended like any good friend would do. What I experienced from there was a special experience. The guest I brought to the program bought your book. As she left she only got as far as the parking structure before she started reading it. She had met Victoria Scott and there was an unspoken connection. As she sat in her car in the dark of the parking garage she read Victoria’s segment and wept because Victoria’s story was her story. I imagine this experience has been repeated hundreds of times as women read your book and find a perspective, a connection, that is personal to them.
When I read your book I did not expect to make a connection. I was expecting a collection of stories about women who had overcome some special trial or pain in their lives to eventually succeed. While this did occur, I did not feel this was the intent of the book. Instead, as I read and added my own notes to your summary notes and the comments by the authors I witnessed a collection of personal journeys that wove a fabric of real life. A tapestry that is special to women, granting them perspectives on life just like the color bands that make up a rainbow. These were stories that never make it to TV because they are personal. They reflect real life….life that is painful and joyous, challenging and disappointing, confusing, and courageous and all the other emotions that go into a personal story.
In my work as the Lead Consultant in my company, The Threshold Performance Group, I often provide mentoring and coaching to women. About two years ago I decided to use your book as a regular part of my sessions with two managers that I was preparing for promotion to executive corporate positions. We worked together over 18 months. At the end of each of our segments we closed with separate time to reflect on the passages in your book. It was very effective in their growth journey and a key part in my success in working with them. Enough so that I recommend that other mentors or coaches use your book in their unique lesson plans. The varied outcomes are as separate as the individual stories within the book. It worked well for me and I think the options for expanded growth and learning are exciting.
Thank you for making your dream a reality and providing both women and men with a valuable tool for reflection and growth.
My best,
Don
